My Terminology As A Person With Bipolar Disorder
I do not speak on behalf of all people with bipolar disorder on this earth. Hence the title "My Terminology". But I still hope this article can help people close to people with Bipolar Disorder to have a more enjoyable life with your partner.
How to Speak With People With Bipolar Disorder
Broken Things
I don't like complexity, especially when my thoughts and feelings are filled with things that "fight" with each other. So try to convey something simple. Don't show me the mistake I just made, because maybe that is what made me mourn the situation.
Don't ask, "is this glass broken?", If you already know the glass is clearly broken. This will only make you look stupid "in my eyes" by asking questions that are clearly the answer.
I prefer to respond to words, not questions or commands.
So, I will greatly appreciate and respond to the words, "this broken glass can hurt you, are you hurt?"
Believe me, I will clean up the broken glass as a reply to your kind words, and maybe will begin to tell why the glass broke. Depends on the ongoing mood.
Initially, it was difficult, I am sure of that. So I am very grateful to have a partner who understands me. Because to be honest, someone with Bipolar is very annoying. Even I hate myself, why others won't?
Giving "Commands"
As I mentioned above, the question is something annoying. And, getting told to do something is as annoying. So, if you are forced to give a "command" and do not want an unnecessarily long and contra productive dialog, specify your "command", and pack it in the form of questions.
For example, you want me to move the table that blocks the door. Determine your solution, and wrap it in the form of a question that's actually a "trap".
Ask, "do you think the table should be near a wall or near the window?"
Whatever answer you will receive, the table will be moved successfully. Your mission is complete, and I will feel proud by giving the right choice.
Don't say, "move the table!" Believe me, this will only make you more tired than having to move the table itself.
That's it for now, and thank's for reading!
